SERENE – Clasp (AFP)

Operation SERENE was the AFP response to civil unrest in the newly independent nation of Timor-Leste (formerly the Indonesian province of East Timor), which broke out in 2006. The AFP deployed around 200 members to East Timor in support of the Australian Defence Force led effort to help stabilize the country. Following the first deployment of a contingent of AFP members on May 28, 2006, two further deployments were made to assist with the AFP’s operations. Operation SERENE ceased on August 28, 2006 with the transfer of the AFP contingent to the United Nations civilian police organization established under the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT). Members of the AFP who were involved in Operation SERENE were awarded the AFP Operations Medal with clasp SERENE.
