Description

Instituted on 22 February 1995, this medal recognises service in peacekeeping or non-warlike operations in the 30-year period following World War II prior to February 1975. Clasps indicate the service for which the medal is awarded.
The medal is nickel-silver, 38mm in diameter. The obverse bears the Australian arms above a spray of wattle and the inscription THE AUSTRALIAN SERVICE MEDAL 1945–1975. The reverse displays a large Federation Star with sprays of wattle between the points and a rectangular space for the recipient’s name. The suspension is a King Edward crown. The ribbon has a central gold stripe flanked by two green stripes which in turn are flanked by stripes of silver-grey, dark and light blue.

• KASHMIR – For 30 days’ service in India or Pakistan with UNMOGIP or UNIPOM between 13 August 1948 and 13 February 1975.
• KOREA – For participation in UN Commission activities in Korea (9-23 June 1950), 30 days’ service with British Commonwealth Forces Korea in Korea or Japan (28 July 1953 to 26 August 1957) or with UN Command (MAC) in the DMZ of Korea (27 August 1957 to 13 February 1975).
• F.E.S.R. – For 30 days’ service on RAN ships that were part of the Far East Strategic Reserve 2 July 1955 to 30 October 1971.
