Things to look out for with mounted medals
I find it interesting that often those responsible for the examples below will boast that they only use “top quality materials” as a substitute for poor workmanship. Everyone pretty much uses the same materials so they are “overcompensating” for something, either quality or price. They key is workmanship not the materials.
It’s a common practice by many to put felt or fabric backing when mounting medals.
The only good reason to do this is if a rare medal is involved and the ribbon is unobtainable and there is not enough ribbon available to do a full wrap around.
However some medal mounters use it to cover up poor quality work or ribbon that has been shorted to save a few dollars of ribbon.
These ribbons will need to be replaced when it comes time to remount or add a medal.

The other common “Cost saving” is using cardboard as a substrate.
When it comes time to add another medal or remount your medals the ribbon is ruined and needs to be replaced.
When deconstructing the carboard will come away with the ribbon.
Substrate should be plastic card or to maintain period authenticity buckram.
If medals have been well mounted the ribbons can be recycled many times.
